Chewton
Chewton was once the thriving heart of the Forest Creek diggings and is now a picturesque area surrounded by bushland and the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park; Australia's first heritage park.
One of the most extraordinary gold heritage landmarks in the region is nearby and within the heritage park -the remains of the Garfield Water Wheel are a lasting monument to the enormity of the gold rush.
The town retains a number of historic buildings on Main St (Pyrenees Highway). Visitors can also visit the original Town Hall, which houses a comprehensive photographic collection of Chewton's history, or take a self-guided tour of the area.
